Description

Imaged on four consecutive nights from my light polluted terrace in the center of Vienna. LRGB image with 8" Newton and AtikONE, unguided on 10Micron 1000HPS.

Object: The New General Catalogue designation refers to the open star cluster NGC 7023, which is associated with the nebula, while the nebula itself is designated LBN 487 or VdB 139. The Iris Nebula is a bright reflection nebula located in the Cepheus constellation about 1400 light-years away. The bluish glow of the nebula comes from a hot, massive star at the center of the nebula, named HD 200775. Blue light from the star is scattered off dust grains in the nebula, giving it its distinctive color. The dust can also be seen on the outer portions of the nebula, where it has a brownish color and blocks out stars behind it. Named for its resemblance to the iris flower, the Iris Nebula has a diameter of 6 light-years and occupies an area of 18 by 18 arcminutes of the apparent sky.
